Indi-Illi Park Historical District

Location / Historical Significance:

The Indi-Illi Park Historic District is located just south of the Forest-Southview Historic District and just north of the Roselawn-Forest Heights Historic District. It is one in a group of six districts which border the the Illinois/Indiana state line area of the city. One of the most distinctive features of this district is it's expansive landscaped park which helps to distinguish it from some of the other districts in the area.

This district is part of a larger group of neighborhoods which came into existence around the turn of the twentieth century, due in part to the city's expansive growth. This area was ideal for many of the city's professional and office workers. It's many pluses included modest homes on quiet tree lined streets. The area also bordered Hohman Avenue a major north-south thoroughfare, and it was also closely located to a major streetcar line. A quite popular and sometimes the only mode of transportation of the era.

Architectural Styles:

American Four-Square.

Colonial Revival Cottage.

Dutch Colonial Revival.

A large part of the area's homes are modest interpretations of period revival architectural styles and the bungalow which dominates the district. Over half of the neighborhood's homes are variations of the bungalow. The residences located on the north side of Midway Court help to illustrate a number of the different versions of this very popular architectural style. The more elaborate period revival styles can be found along Hohman Avenue, on the districts most eastern border.

The Colonial Revival style located at 6707 Hohman Avenue has remained virtually unaltered since its construction in 1920. Toned down versions of this style of home are located at 25 and 49 Indi-Illi Parkway. Two of the homes located at 10 and 16 Locust Street are versions of the Colonial Revival Cottage. A very unusual example of the Spanish Eclectic style is located at 6720 Hohman Avenue.

Two fine showpieces of the Tudor Revival style are found at 6744 and 6750 Hohman Avenue. You can find more typical examples of the district's homes are the English Cottage style at 6759 Indi-Illi Parkway and a modest version of the Tudor Rival at 6749 Indi-Illi Parkway.
