Roselawn Forest Heights Historical District

Location / Historical Significance:

The Roselawn Forest Heights Historic District is located directly south of the Indi-Illi Park Historic District and north of the Forest Ivanhoe Historic District in the south Hammond area that borders the Illinois state-line. This area is one in a series of neighborhoods that developed in the city of Hammond around the beginning of the early twentieth century. This rather large side residential area became quite popular with the city's expanding middle class workers who wanted the convenience of living near the downtown but away from all of the congestion and noise. This made the neighborhood an ideal place to live it is located just a short distance from the hustle and bustle of the downtown. Like many of the surrounding neighborhood historical districts, it is filled with many prime examples of bungalows and period revival homes.

Architectural Styles:

Most of the architecturally significant homes in the district are located along Forest Avenue, which runs thought out the middle of the entire district. The city's renown architect L. Cosby Bernard drew up the plans for many of the homes along Forest Avenue including many of which are located the Roselawn-Forest Heights District. Bernard designed the Charles Bomberger Home located at 7127 Forest Avenue, plus the houses which are at 7126 and 7044 Forest Avenue.

Peppered throughout the district are many fine examples of the Bungalow style. The three homes at 11 - 15 - 17 Lawndale Avenue are prime examples of the Bungalow style of architecture. Other more elaborate styles of homes located on Forest Avenue include an outstanding Tudor Revival style residence located at 7220 Forest Avenue, two less ornate examples of this style can be found at 7142 and 7118 Forest Avenue. Yet another period style of architecture the Colonial Revival can be seen at 7208 Forest Avenue. The Colonial Revival Cottage, another popular style of the period is located at 10 and 24 Roselawn Street.
